After two years in the making, in May 2019, IKEA launched a limited edition titled ÖVERALLT which is all about highlighting and showcasing the African contemporary design scene.
The behind the scenes of the ÖVERALLT limited collection
The story of ÖVERALLT began a few years ago when IKEA teamed up with Design Indaba, a global creative network, and online publication, to learn more about what is happening in the contemporary African design sphere.
This turned out to be the start of a collaboration – the first of its kind. In-house IKEA designers teamed up with ten different African designers and artists – from five different countries – within the fields of architecture, fashion, sculpture, and furniture design. Together they explored modern African rituals in urban environments.
The starting point was to explore this area connected to socializing around food, indoor and outdoor living, the rituals around expressing identity and sustainability. From there, the design and development process has resulted in a collection of products that is all about building bridges and discovering the “urban living room” together with others.
Selly Raby Kane (Senegalese Fashion Designer), Laduma Ngxokolo (South African textile designer), Issa Diabaté (architect and designer) and Renee Rossouw are among the different designers behind this collection.
The limited edition collection ÖVERALLT was launched in all IKEA UAE stores and online in May 2019.
This limited edition is a collection of 33 pieces
Here’s a sneak peek of the 33 pieces, mixing modern ideas with traditional craft, designed to create more room for gathering, expressing oneself and creating new and better habits together.
The collection includes large pieces of furniture, tableware, rugs, textiles (cushions, throws, …), and a fashionably sustainable tote bag amongst others – get ready for ÖVERALLT.
Some of the textiles reference African landscapes, rugs are made from recycled crisp packets, while the wooden table with benches and stools’ design immediately encourage socializing; we also really like the oversized black basket looking like braided hair.
The chair – designed by Issa Diabaté, architect and designer – made with plywood couldn’t look more minimalist with its plain light color and no fixing. Very easy to assemble, it will fit in any room and home style and therefore offers many possibilities to add your personal touch and create a unique atmosphere.
