Lars Jan’s Live Aquarium Show Comes to NYU Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Island is really stirring this month in the midst of next week’s epic annual, Abu Dhabi Art. This year NYU Abu Dhabi is presenting in association with the 2016 showcase, too via a visceral performance installation created by visual artist Lars Jan.

Head over to the campus’ Central Plaza next Wednesday to Saturday and get a hold of a stunning artistic representation of climate change’s true layered impact.

Presented in public space, the centrepiece of Holoscenes is a large aquarium that floods, drains, and floods again. The flooding aquarium is inhabited by a rotating cast of performers conducting everyday behaviours sourced from collaborators across the planet.

Prepare to dive deep yourself as the poignant theatre and dance piece – born out of the widely-shared concern that our troubled relationship to water will become the central issue of the 21st century – directly connects the everyday actions of individuals to global climate change. It poetically explores the evolution of human endurance and habitual behaviour in the context of natural catastrophe.

Lars Jan is a celebrated director, writer, visual artist we are eager to get to know better through this daring piece of work. He is also the founding artistic director of Early Morning Opera (EMO), a genre-bending performance + art lab whose works explore emerging technologies, live audiences, and unclassifiable experience. We can think of no more powerful way to kick off the capital’s art season than in his presence.

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov 16 until Saturday, Nov 19. The performance will run in 45-minute segments between 4pm and 9pm each day
