The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-report questionnaire developed by Isabel Briggs-Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs. The survey uses Carl Jung’s theory of personality type to allow users to see which character traits best describes them.

The MBTI is the worlds-leading personality assessment tool which works by sorting people into 16 basic categories that help explain motivations, communication style, personal strengths and challenges. It is extensively used by companies wanting to understand and appreciate individual differences, ease communication with people, increase teamwork, reduce conflict and develop leadership.

The test focuses on four principal psychological functions; Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling and Judging/Perceiving, and then sorts these psychological differences into four dichotomies resulting in 16 possible psychological types.

The 16 personality types are made up using an abbreviation of four letters – each letter represents the first letter of your four type preferences. For instance; ESTJ: extraversion (E), sensing (S), thinking (T), judgment (J) or INFP: introversion (I), intuition (N), feeling (F), perception (P).

I must admit when I first heard about the MBTI I was a little sceptical, but after taking the test I was pleasantly surprised – it was amazingly accurate and gave me an understanding of how I perceive the world. I would definitely recommend you give it a go – especially those looking at a new career path or self-development.
