Seen on fashion insiders and celebs alike, Danish-Irish designer Maria Black’s namesake jewelry line has become a fast favorite for its sleek simplicity and made-to-mix-and-match designs.
Black initially trained in Copenhagen where she graduated with a Goldsmith degree in 2009 and launched her first collection just a year later. Her main objective was to emphasize the everyday look of modern women and challenge ubiquitous body decorations. As a crowning moment of her academic studies, Maria won a design grant and received personal royal recognition from HRH Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
Taking inspiration from her travels to Brazil, India and Ibiza her jewelry focuses on precious metals instead of glitzy gems, clean simple lines, geometric formations, subtle textures and repeated patterns. Stackable rings can be worn on fingers or toes, and earrings are designed to be interchangeable. Almost like Lego, pieces can be combined together in different ways, forming new shapes and patterns.
According to the designer, who is now based in London, her love of jewelry started at a young age. “It all started with earrings, when I had my ears pierced at 10 years old. I built a huge collection of earrings and wore different ones every day. I just loved the way they framed my face, and the bigger the better,” Black explained.
