ABU DHABI’S MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS – Part 2

Our preferred leaning tower in Abu Dhabi

Capital Gate the marvelous leaning tower of Abu Dhabi

Located beside the ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center), Capital Gate is an iconic building that is impossible to miss despite the cities growing landscape.

This famous building stands majestically, often glittering at night, as a wedding gown with its shadow coating the exhibition center.

With a strikingly obvious lean, Capital Gate is our local ‘Tower of Pisa’ featuring an impressive 18 degrees incline to the west. It’s even more impressive when you know it is four times the inclination of the Tower of Pisa.

This specific characteristic allowed this building to enter the Guiness World Records and since June 2010 it is certified as the ‘World’s furthest leaning man-made tower’.

To build this complicated design, a diagrid technology has been used in the construction of this iconic structure. It means that every single diamond of the external cladding is supported by the steel diagrid panel.

With its 35 floors and 160m high, it is able to house Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi Hotel which occupies the 18th to 33rd floors.

With its floor to ceiling windows, the panoramic view on the city is just incredible, especially at night. We experienced this during an Iftar in 2013 at the restaurant 18 Degrees and it was a great experience. (read our article here)
