Solar Impulse 2, the first solar powered plane took off for its first leg to Muscat from Abu Dhabi on its round-the-world flight
Abu Dhabi has once again made history by the departure of the first solar power plane, Solar Impulse 2. Headed to Muscat from Abu Dhabi Al Bateen Executive Airport, it is the first attempt to circumnavigate the Earth in an exclusively solar-powered plane. Estimated to take 10 hours, flying the first leg is chief engineer Andre Borschberg. This is the first plane flying solely on solar power and will complete its entire journey by landing back in Abu Dhabi in a period of 5 months.

Why Abu Dhabi?
An initiative by Masdar, this flight is a means of spreading a message of promoting clean technology to the world and the generations to come. The Solar Impulse crew and entire team have been hosted by Masdar and Abu Dhabi Government for the entire length of the program including the training and testing period.
