The mango is known as the ‘King of Fruits.’
It’s that time of year again… The thermometers are rising and the hot, humid weather is leaving us feeling lethargic and exhausted. But for some, the season is synonymous with something energising, uplifting and refreshing – and that, of course, is the abundance of fresh mangoes from Pakistan.
The mango is known as the ‘King of Fruits’ in South Asia – and there are 450 known varieties, which have been cultivated for thousands of years. Fans of the fruit in Abu Dhabi are in luck – as we have found in Abu Dhabi many Pakistani varieties of the fruit throughout summer !
We bought a bag full of ‘Sindhri’ at Abu Dhabi Cooperative supermarket and let them chill in the fridge for a few hours. After a rinse under the tap and a quick dry, we sat down with our sleeves rolled up to enjoy the experience. We poked at the mango on all sides and gently massaged it till the pulp felt like it was loosening up. Then we picked a small hole at the top with our fingers and drank the juice. Once we were sure all the liquid was out, we pulled the skin apart and ate the rest of the pulp that was on the seed.
The intense sweet flavor is rather addictive – and as the poet Mirza Ghalib famously said: ‘In my opinion, there are only two necessary requirements concerning mangoes. Firstly, they should be sweet and secondly, they should be plentiful!’
Available in most supermarkets in Abu Dhabi in June and July
