It’s not every day you go into a Spin class and hear: “If you start to feel dizzy or disoriented, just look down”, but that’s how much of a trip The Trip really is.

Once the lights are dimmed and the cinema-sized screen whirs up, you’re displaced to a city somewhere closer to Mars than here. The 40-minute, HIIT-style session leads us through empty streets in a downpour, and a series of hills and turns paired with pumping tracks that really puts our legs and core to work.

We’re so busy either hopping off and on the seat while “exploring the sights” – or trying not to video the heady experience on our phones – that the halfway point sneaks up on us.

The second leg is heavier (literally), and pedalled out in a glittering, futuristic night-time metropolis that distinctly reminds us of scenes in the movie Tron. There are virtual things to duck from, building facades to scale, and hectic spinning shapes to whip through to the sweaty finish. Needless to say, some people did have to look down – at points it actually physically feels like a rollercoaster.

With 12 different programmes to “travel” to here, this is a really good gateway drug to Spin for newbies, and a refreshing new setting for bored seasoned cyclists.

Apparently only 24 gyms in the world offer The Trip, and Abu Dhabi is proud host to one of them. Years in the making, popular ladies fitness providers, Inspire Sports have finally branched out on their own into a state-of-the-art compound in Al Bateen that boasts four group studios, PT and gym suites, a crèche, and very soon to come a spa, indoor swimming pool and sports hall to further cater to their top-notch kids’ programmes.

It’s a bright, funky, already-busy place that ladies will love – if not for the chatty, fun atmosphere and killer coaches, then definitely the unbeatable rates. Classes are only 60 AED, with multiple attractive visitor and member packages available.
