Are you in for an Iftar with Regional cuisine?
There are so many options to break the fast this Ramadan in the Capital. For those on the lookout for the traditional Iftar buffet with Middle Eastern and regional recipes, Essence Restaurant at Beach Rotana hotel is just the place.
Apart the classic hot and cold Arabic mezze, we enjoyed tasting many new Arabic inspired salad recipes and appetizers including stuffed baby marrow, zaatar and watergrass salad, Basturma, Baba ganoush, Okra salad, Cucumber and yogurt salad.
It was our first time tasting a ‘Shankleesh salad’, an old Middle Eastern recipe that uses ripened cheese. To be honest, it looked really nice with crumbled cheese and many colorful diced vegetables but the super strong taste of the ripened cheese – this is the classic recipe – can be quite a surprise for the newbies.
If you are into fresh salads, you will certainly enjoy this buffet as there are aplenty appetizing and colorful salads and greens to try that were as flavorful as they were colorful.
No worries if you are more into International cuisine as there also is a seafood corner and different international main courses to eat.
The mains include Lamb Ouzi, Lebanese sausages, and many other different dishes you don’t often see on buffet menus.
If you have a sweet taste, save room for desserts as this section is a delight! An entire room is dedicated to sweets and they all look gorgeous. We loved tasting many different Arabic and Middle Eastern sweets, such as Turkish delights, flavored Maamoul, Pistachio Mafroukeh and so many more. The homemade ice cream stall was one of the highlights in this room. The six flavours available were quite unique because of their Arabic touch : dates & honey, Arabic coffee, Laban and Mix berry, Umali, Baklava, Waterlemon Lime iallab. This last one was our favorite as it had touch of lemon that ended our meal on a lovely note.
The musician playing the oud, the oversized coffee pots and the regional dishes give this Iftar an authentic feel.
