Spend an Iftar night at Origins this year
You kind of always expect a memorable experience when you rock up to the iconic Yas Viceroy in all its purple, glowing glory, don’t you? And so we already sat down to dinner with high hopes for Origins’ Iftar to impress.
The award-winning all-day dining venue is serving up all the classic Arabic delicacies you expect to find during Ramadan, but at an elevated standard across a family-style menu. As plump as the dates look, grab a traditional juice – kamar al din with apricot, jalab with date blossom or airan with yoghurt. The flavorful yellow lentil soup came with bread and was a hearty and wholesome start.
Try hard not to fill up on the cold mezze – rich and creamy hummus, moutabel or mouhamarah, fresh fattoush and tabbouleh with wonderful crunch and flavour. Forget forks, the bread is warm, ready and plentiful to accompany this cold mezze selection. The signature moist meat kibbehs scented with ample spice and filled with fresh pistachio chunks were our favorite among the oriental hot mezze.
If you’ve been to many an Iftar, it’s very easy to become uninspired by the usual mixed grills and biryanis, but Yas Viceroy proposes a seafood grill option that will reconcile you with grill! It includes Omani lobster, gulf prawns, and squids that pair very well with Mediterranean vegetables. If you are more ‘meat oriented’ though, there are some lively ingredients in the tawooks, tenderloins, the cutlets and kebabs here that really make them succulent. And the heaping lamb ouzi doesn’t disappoint either.
While we hardly could stomach more, we experienced one of the “very Viceroy” desserts – classic hot, house made baked cheesy kunafa paired with cool baklava ice cream – that we highly recommend to try!
