A tropical atmosphere for the latest limited collection IKEA just unveiled.
It’s not that often that we feature mainstream brands such as IKEA but sometimes a collection and the story behind it deserves to be spread around.
When we first saw the images of this new collection that is limited and has been launched in the UAE in June 2015, it’s hard to describe but the whole team adored this stylish NIPPRIG collection.
The green side of the story…
Some items in the collection are indeed produced from an invasive water plant called water hyacinth that makes a lot of damage in Asian countries.
Originated from South America, it grows at a fast pace covering waterways like a green carpet and asphyxiating the native local plants around. This environmental threat has been turned into a sustainable remedy as once the plants are removed , they are dried and used as a material to weave them into baskets, bags and mats… with the skills of local craftpeople.
The design side of the story…
This limited collection is actually the result of close teamwork between an IKEA designer – Nike Karlsson – who spent a few months in Vietnam and Indonesia working closely with local craftman.
While the designer started working on this collection with a few sketches in mind, there was a lot of back and forth in the process thanks to the human interaction between the designer and the skilled crafters who knew better than anyone the features of the natural materials : how it bends, how it breaks, …
The result…
Our most favorite items in this collection definitely are the chairs and side tables that comes in three colors : beige, green and black. It makes us think of La Havane or Louisiana with their vintage and colorful style. We just want to have them in our home and enjoy a nap on them!
The collection also includes hats (7 AED only, too good to be true), beach bags at 19 and 25 AED depending on the sizes, broom that add this supplement of charm to your outdoor (15 AED) and many more objects such as rugs, floor cushions, loungers, hooks or room dividers.
This limited collection is absolutely worth the drive to the giant Swdish store. Get yours before it’s too late …
