Have fun and get fit with this 50-minute workout

If you’re the type of person that prefers dancing or group fitness classes over a traditional workout, this may be right up your alley. NIA is a holistic fitness technique that engages both the body and mind. It involves non-impact movements involving dance, martial arts such as Taekwondo, Aikido and a bit of Tai-chi and yoga.

One of the best things about NIA is that it’s designed for beginners, intermediate or advanced students, as exercises can be done at three levels of intensity.

Throughout the 50-minute session barefoot students, led by an instructor, follow the choreography which integrates rhythmic tunes.

A typical class starts with a 10-minute warm up consisting of loose movements that mirror Tai chi. This is followed by 30 minutes of cardio training to music where you combine sustained low-impact aerobics movements with martial arts.

The class ends with a 10-minute cool down as students stretch and follow yoga-inspired exercises.

Overall, it’s definitely an easy routine to get into that will help you unwind for the weekend.

Alice, a US certified NIA trainer teaches at The Room in Abu Dhabi every Thursday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am (65 AED per session).
