It has already been a year since 99 Sushi bar and restaurant opened in Abu Dhabi

Do you have a favorite Japanese fine dining restaurant in the city? There will be a few obvious choices that you may pick, but have you visited 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant at Al Maryah Island? If not, you definitely should!

In just a year – they celebrated their first anniversary in October 2018 – 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant has managed to build a solid reputation for serving the best of Japanese haute cuisine. Try it once and it will stay at the top of your list.

We were lucky to be invited to try some of the lavish new additions to their menu – available since October 2018 –  that are worth checking out.

First of all, let us give you an overview of the restaurant atmosphere. The space has a very intimate style that is ideal for both a romantic dinner or an elegant catch-up with friends. Service is fantastic, both knowledgeable and very attentive and if you are a sake amateur, you are in good hands as the sommelier was awarded best sake sommelier in London in 2016.

Restaurant Decor feel

With the weather starting to cool down, take advantage of the outdoor terrace to have a mocktail or cocktail before dinner. With its impressive floor to ceiling grass wall, comfy velvet sofas and trendy ceramic tiles on the floor, their terrace has a “glamour” touch and the cherry on top is the view of the sea and the Abu Dhabi skyline.

The restaurant has introduced ten or so brand new dishes to indulge in. After a recent tasting dinner, here are some highlights we definitely wanted to share with you.

The Horse Mackerel Tartar is perfect to share (see top image). It is very refreshing and somehow feels like you are eating the sea (in a good way!) thanks to the seaweed, ginger and the ponzu sauce. Among the starters, make sure you order the Toro Tartar caviar which is as playful as it is delicate on the palate. The fatty tuna belly is generously served with caviar, along with soy sauce and wasabi. Grab your chopsticks, make a roll out of the tartar slice around the caviar and just take time to savor the bite!

The maki aficionados can experience the Daikon Toro Tuna Maki; wrapped with a refreshing slice of daikon, it comes with avocado, tobiko and shiso leaves.  You can also try the Tori Maki, soy marinated chicken with tangy mango vinaigrette and crisp rice wafer.

Although it is not new on the menu, the flambe blue Lobster Maki is one of their signature dishes and an absolute must-try as it will surely please all the guests around the table.

The restaurant has introduced a Japanese surf and turf creation which is one of the best-sellers in Spain. Called The Sakane Nabe, this dish features a sauteed fish selection – eel, raw tuna, prawns – in a bouillabaisse made of yellow chili, mussels and foie. A pleasure for the eyes, you almost hesitate to take nibbles of this sophisticated and colorful main. We personally were blown over by the delicious mussel sauce which paired well with all the other ingredients.

If you want to finish on a sweet note, make sure to try the Yuzu Cheesecake that is topped with matcha powder. It’s light, refreshing and devored in no time. They also master the Chocolate Caramel Fondant if you want something sweeter.
