A one-stop joint to get your Shawarma and Falafel fix
As bizarre as it may look, we have hardly written about any specific Arabic street food joints in the city, specialising in shawarmas and falafels. There are a lot spread across Abu Dhabi, but it’s not always easy to park nearby, so we end up skipping them.
We have just stepped into a local joint called Shawarma Counter that is located downtown (see map above) and has a lot of convenient parking spots nearby.
The reason why we picked this one rather than any of the others is that this tiny eatery has made an effort on the decor with plastic boxes filled with glass bottled soft drinks here and there, vintage enamel posters on the wall, quirky lamps and just details that add a cool attitude to the spot.
No clue if it’s the best shawarma spot in town, that is not the point! We just enjoyed our order of falafel at an unbeatable price (6 AED for 8 pieces) that did the job, being crispy on top and moist inside. We’ll definitely order more to grab to take home next time. Their beef shawarma sandwich was tasty and juicy thanks to the tahini sauce, garnished with onions, chopped fresh tomatoes, and parsley. Priced at 14 AED only, it was served with pickles on the side.
If you are not in a hurry and wish to enjoy your street food outdoors, they have settled a rustic outdoor terrace with wooden tables and benches.
