A unique textbook mixing Emirati dialect and the culture of the UAE
Interested in learning basic local Arabic and discovering more aspects from the culture in the UAE? We recently discovered a book that proposes non-Arab speakers an introduction to learning Emirati dialect as well as information and images related to the culture of the UAE.
Before being published, this book entitled Ramsah was taught to non-Arab students at New York University Abu Dhabi and the authors Ayesha Al Hashemi and Nasser Isleem are both currently teaching at NYUAD. You can purchase this book at the recently opened bookstore located close to New York University Campus on Saadyiat Island.
Priced at 120 AED only, it is a complete book comprising of structure, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. It also has a lot of dialogues and vocabulary useful in daily use.
What makes it also quite unique is the presentation in English through texts, exercises, vocabulary in Arabic (with a phonetic guide) of typical local subjects such as the history of the 7 Emirates, the Mawaqif, wedding congratulations, local clothing, food, clothes, work habbits, hobbies, traditional dances and songs, pearls and much more. There are also samples of poetry, songs, films and TV injected into the book linked to these different subjects.
There is a QR code that gives you access to all the audio files associated to the book chapters with voices of native speakers used to expose the learner to natural speech content.
The different photos throughout the book relate to our daily life in Abu Dhabi and definitely makes it very appealing to have in the home.
