Are you in the mood for homemade healthy, gluten-free, vegan and tasty food? Your in luck because Skinny Genie has it all and the good news is either you can visit their brand new cafe in Abu Dhabi or they can also come to you as they offer delivery across Abu Dhabi.

Already familiar with the brand in Dubai – as the concept was UAE born in 2013 – we were quite delighted to discover that Skinny Genie decided to make its way to the Capital. A first outlet has opened in November 2017 at Masdar City – location close to the entrance of Gate 3 in Siemens Building if you are familiar with Masdar (location map below) – and a second spot will be opening soon in downtown, Khalidiya area.

 

What is Skinny Genie all about?

Skinny Genie proposes a healthy and indulgent spread, from breakfast options to salads, sandwiches, main courses, snacks, and desserts. Everything sold at Skinny Genie is made by hand, 100% gluten-free, using organic yet local ingredients.

The menu even mentions that “100% of the products they sell are HACCP certified, to ensure the quality and traceability of all ingredients used”. They also “get away from artificial flavorings, preservatives, and chemicals usually found in today’s food industry.”

The cafe is not that big but it has a lot of character with a vintage and industrial decor mixing metal, wood with a lot of greenery dotted around. You’ll find 5 or 6 tables inside the cafe with oversized plants hanging on the walls.

Shelves are filled with healthy, appealing and colorful dishes to grab, all displayed in enclosed glass jars. There is also a large corner to enjoy your meal outdoors with both lounge sofas with low tables, regular tables and chairs and even high tables.

After grabbing our wooden tray at the entrance of the cafe, we browsed the different shelves and had a hard time choosing our food as there were many appealing items. Once we selected our meal we went to our table and the waiter brought our order to us.  The enamel crockery made the presentation quite lovely.

The colorful Kale Chicken Caesar Avocado salad (48AED) layered by ingredients in a tall jar was definitely tempting and a winning choice! The chicken breast was juicy and the avocado dressing completed it perfectly. We did feel that the kale needed a bit more care and should have been massaged to make it less crunchy. But we understand, as the ingredients are mixed last minute and the kale sits right on top.

 

Our guest went for a tasty homemade foul which was very filling and quite spicy. Her organic Root cold-pressed juice was refreshing and unsweetened, prepared with beetroot, carrot, lemon, apple, and ginger. For her main course, she enjoyed the brown fusilli salad served with a homemade pesto.

Given that desserts are all homemade, we couldn’t help but order a slice of mango and lime cake that was moist enough and slightly too sweet for our taste. If you are into chocolate, please grab a slice of their pumpkin brownie. We loved the texture and finished our generous slice in no time.

The concept is great but we also have many more reasons to love it. First of all, if you decide to grab something for takeaway, there is a 5AED add-on for the glass jar. If you decide to bring it back for your next visit, you receive a 5AED voucher for its cost on your next order. Your choice!

Skinny Genie also proposes an interesting rewarding program where you earn 10% value of your order after signing up.

All the different food items sold mention the detailed ingredients, seasonings and the exact number of calories which is quite helpful and convenient especially if you are on a diet.

If you are on a budget and enjoy nothing more than having breakfast any time of the day, we liked the idea Skinny Genie came up with as they actually sell every single fresh breakfast item with 30% discount after 3 pm. Interesting and sustainable!

We are totally hooked to this newcomer in Abu Dhabi and plan to order again very soon!

The cafe is open daily from 8 am to 11 pm (9 am to 11.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Skinny Genie delivers from 10 am to 11 pm on weekdays, and 12 pm to 10 pm during the weekends (orders via what’s app or phone at 800 754 669 and payment available by cash and credit card.
