Awesome news! Black Tap, the cult Burger Joint from New York, is now open at Yas Mall!

After a great start in the UAE with two licensed locations around Dubai – Jumeirah Al Naseem and the Rixos Premium Dubai in Jumeirah Beach Residence – we were excited to try the craft burgers in our city, Abu Dhabi.

This craft burger joint opened its doors in July 2018 in Abu Dhabi at Yas Mall, close to Ferrari World entrance (the joint is located beside Bucco). A great spot to head to during the weekend to indulge in delicious burgers or an Instagrammable milkshake.

Black Tap owner and Michelin-starred chef Joe Isidori says that “Black Tap takes the classic American luncheonette, and puts our spin on it, with high quality ingredients, 90s hip hop pumping through the speakers, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere,” and that is exactly the vibe we felt when we arrived there.

There is a casual ambiance inside the restaurant thanks to the 90s hip hop pumping through the speakers, the oversized graffiti walls and the overall industrial decor flair mixing black leathered chairs pairing well with the light brown wooden tables along with green plants here and there. The friendly staff is fitted in black uniforms and blackcap worn backwards with “Black Tap AUH” written on them.

While the tables close to the entrance will allow you to enjoy watching the team prepare the decadent crazyshakes, we enjoyed sitting at the back of the restaurant, offering a more intimate atmosphere with a view on the Yas mall fountains.

A few words about the Black Tap joint menu

The menu features burgers ranging from the classic All-American to The Vegan Burger, along with burger salad options, spicy Korean wings and sides such as Teriyaki Broccoli and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. The Greg Norman Burger, with wagyu beef, house buttermilk-dill dressing, blue cheese, and arugula won “People’s Choice” at the New York City Wine & Food Festival’s Burger Bash competition three years in a row in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The menu also includes the classic All-American Burger (their top seller) and the all-natural Californian with turkey, avocado, Swiss cheese and truffle mayo.

Vegetarians fear not, as the regionally-inspired Falafel Burger is on the menu, as is the popular Vegan Burger, crafted from a black bean patty, pickled onions, salsa verde, cilantro and vegan mayo.
For the desserts, Black Tap’s signature CrazyShake™ milkshakes have reached worldwide acclaim with their whimsical and over the top decorations and flavors such as The Cotton Candy Shake, Sweet n Salty, and The Bam Bam Shake.

We obviously gave a try to some of their signature dishes and shared six pieces of the spicy Korean wings to start off our meal. This starter (38 AED) was not as spicy as we would have expected and was a nice pick offering a balanced sweet and sour taste.

For the mains, we went for the old fashioned burger (85AED) – prime burger, cremini mushrooms, Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, horseradish sauce – and the Greg Norman burger (110AED) – with Wagyu beef and blue cheese. The brioche buns were soft, both meats were very tender, well cooked and we definitely enjoyed both the sweet and regular potatoes coming aside. Not used to blue cheese with a burger, it was quite strong for our personal taste and almost overpowered the taste of the wagyu beef.

Forget counting calories for a day and sip one of their crazyshakes!

Even though we were not hungry for more, we couldn’t help but order a Crazyshake to share for two. We went for the Cotton Candy Shake: strawberry shake with a vanilla frosted rim with blue, pink and pearl chocolates, garnished with a pink lollipop, rock candy, whipped cream and cotton candy. It will give you a sugar high that pleases both the little ones and brings back childhood memories for the adults.
