Friday Night Bites at the Sportsman’s Arms

This American-Irish gastropub is determined to set a trend based around brunching at just about any time of the day, it seems, and Friday nights are now dedicated to the Boston Brunch. No need to doll up early to catch the midday munchies – enjoy a lazy Friday, then rock up to the Sportsman’s from 7pm for a leisurely dinner deal.  

The Boston Brunch is not the typical spread you’ll see at brunches across town; rather a special menu of select favourites that come course by course – a sharing starter platter, your choice of main from six filling options, and a dessert plate of four small sweet endings. Naturally, bottomless drinks complete the package.

Of the opening light bites, nothing satisfied more than the lovely, light and flaky caramelized onions and goat cheese tartlets; and the farmhouse terrine paired well with gunks of gorgeous, chunky piccalilli and fruit chutney. Fat cured salmon slices, haddock fishcakes, and pulled beef croquettes filled us up pretty quick, too.

On to mains, we’re big fans of their hearty Irish stew, and if we weren’t so full we’d have gone for the huge and highly recommended pizzas. But dessert beckoned, and didn’t disappoint. Highlights there included the bun-shaped apple pie and lip-smacking sticky toffee pudding.
