Modern Greek recipes to experience in a bright and breezy setting at The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort
Mazi Abu Dhabi officially opened its doors in October 2019 at The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and we had the privilege to be one of the first to get a first glance at the restaurant ahead of the opening and meet the co-founders Adrien and Christina.
This married couple together launched MAZI London, a small Greek taverna located in Notting Hill in London, that soon became the place to be, offering a modern twist to traditional Greek cuisine. Seven years later, this highly successful cozy spot has a 2-week waiting list. If we tell you that the most Michelin starred Chef in the world Alain Ducasse said “Mazi is pure alchemy and poetry”, it will surely make you want to head there, no?
And the good news is that we can come and discover MAZI cuisine anytime in Abu Dhabi now that they have launched their first-ever restaurant outside of London. Indeed, after bringing Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi to their premises, The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort just managed to bring this trendy London concept to their resort.
MAZI which means “together” in Greek is all about sharing small plates which are reinterpreted versions of classic dishes.
Located beside OLEA restaurant, MAZI ABU DHABI is looking forward to welcoming families and friends anytime with this trendy concept now launched in the Capital.
We just loved the outstanding decor, with white marble walls pairing well with gorgeous shades of dark green, turquoise and blue from walls to tables and golden touches of yellow. You just feel like it is a reinterpretation of the glamorous Greek landscapes of Santorini or white villages in Greece, with the blue sea, turquoise doors, and sunshine.
We already plan to book a table outdoors as soon as the weather gets cooler as MAZI Abu Dhabi also features terrace seating surrounded by 150-years old olive trees-giving it that distinct holiday destination vibe.
All favorites from the London menu available for guests to taste
Adrien and Christina brought Saranto Rapatas, their London head Chef along with the London Sous-Chef to Abu Dhabi and both of them will now look after MAZI Abu Dhabi.
Scanning the MAZI Abu Dhabi menu, we were surprised to see it all fits on a single page and all prices are totally affordable, which pairs well with the concept of sharing comforting small plates without any guilt feeling.
During our visit, the MAZI Abu Dhabi team showcased some of their best-sellers in London which include the Grilled Aubergine with soy and thyme honey and Fish Roe mousse tarama topped with lemon pearls and coming both in a jar. The Sea Bream Tartare with avocado mousse and squid ink rice puff was quite a hit at the table too.
To be honest, we hopefully didn’t have to answer the difficult question “Which was your favorite” as we must admit we had a lot of crushes while tasting some samples at the table! We especially enjoyed the cute Courgette Cakes rolled as balls to best enjoy with a refreshing cucumber and mint dip, or the comforting old-fashioned Grandma’s Meatballs, hand made crisps coming with a yogurt and tomato sauce along. A pure delish!
The most surprising dish probably was their Feta Tempura bites which mix sweet and savory tastes as it comes topped with lemon marmalade and caper meringue.
Among the mains, you should definitely try the Grilled Octopus. The tender grilled octopus lies on green mash potato prepared with parsley and capers that give that surprising color with a few dots of black olive tapenade looking like mini mushrooms. Just gorgeous!
