Don’t miss the touring “In The Making” Exhibition at Warehouse 421 by The Design Museum London
We stumbled across a very informative and interesting exhibition earlier this year at Warehouse 421 that deserves a shout out. It is especially interesting for kids and teenagers and design amateurs.
Entitled “In The Making”, this exhibition is curated by award-winning British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and reveals some information about the production process of 24 iconic products from our everyday life.
It was a delight watching our kids spend more than an hour going from one object to another, reading the information, watching videos and coming back to the same object to get a second thought about the design and production process.
What makes this design exhibition different is the approach used to think about the production process.
Every object chosen (varying from a tennis ball, felt hat, trumpet, Mac Book Pro, whistle, the Olympic Torch, cork, cricket bat, pencil and even silver fork… ) is physically exhibited in an incomplete state to uncover the intriguing beauty of production and provide a glimpse of Barber and Osgerby’s ongoing dialogue with the manufacturing process.
Each object has actually been chosen for either its unexpected form or the production technique employed. We therefore stop in front of very curious forms that make the final product not immediately recognizable.
IN THE MAKING
At the end of the exhibition, you can also compare the production state to the final object when the object is complete.
There is also a long communal table, chairs, table lights fully covered with many design books. The ambience makes you feel as if you are visiting a library and learning about design. Each object has a technical specifications sheet nicely displayed along the wall that visitors are encouraged to grab and read.
Warehouse 421 has partnered with The Design Museum from London for this regional debut of “In the Making” Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.
