Little Mexico Takes Our Taste Buds South of the Border
Little Group’s chain of global street food-inspired restaurants have started popping up in neighbourhoods across Abu Dhabi. Among them is Little Mexico, which holds cute and colourful fort on Saadiyat Island.
As the only restaurant within a pricy gated community, the ‘cantina’ is a little oddly placed, and yet it lures guests in with its ‘loudly, proudly Latin’ façade, décor and music. Unlicensed and cheap as chips, it’s become a hit with families in the area.
They offer all the classics and more – from Mexican breakfast staples like eggs rancheros to tortas, tacos and tamales, and even Mexican sodas.
We sipped a not-too-sweet Mango Jarrito to cool off the steam from a jalapeno popper (not for the fainthearted), before enjoying repeated handfuls of really good corn tortilla nachos dipped in countless flavourful sides.
The burritos are just okay, and filling enough, but we’re glad we saved room for some excellent, prepared-in-front-of-us, soft tacos. The two winners we chose were the skirt steak with shredded cheese and salsa verde; and a lively lobster taco drizzled in fruity mango and lime sauce.
For sweets, you can enjoy flan, churros or authentic sopapillas. But why is there no horchata?
Either way, the menu is extensive and very exciting to read, so we’ll be back for repeat Mexican adventures, such as their ‘Loca Brunch’ or ‘Ceviche Saturdays’.
