Their revamped menu is a must try

If you are craving a good steak, read on as The Foundry steakhouse definitely deserves a visit. Located at the Mezzanine floor at The Southern Sun Hotel on Mina Street – check the map above – The Foundry impresses firstly with its lovely decor.

Opt for their private booth

Ideally, we recommend you visit with a group of friends so that you may book a table for 4 at the Lotus Island. Entering the restaurant, you cannot miss the three private booths surrounded by water that have a lotus shape. Comfortably settled, we were surprised to see how the decor offers such a welcoming and intimate vibe.

A lot to discover in this menu…

Shaunne Cordier recently joined The Foundry as the new Chef and added his personal signature to the menu.
Kindly invited by The Foundry to discover his newly crafted menu, we noticed there was a lovely balance between the old favorite dishes and new appetizing options still to discover.

First thing coming to the table is the bread and butter trolley and you are invited to taste different homemade breads paired with flavored homemade butters including the cajun spice and the curry butters that were our favorites.

Every day, the Chef and his team design a different amuse-bouche and our colorful crab cannelloni topped with mango caviar pearls.

For our starters, we went for their sizzling sashimi that was a real delight for the eyes and the palate. While the raw salmon, octopus, Ahi tuna, scallops topped with sesame seeds are nicely displayed on the plate, expect a bit of drama as the waiter drops very hot extra virgin oil that sizzles the raw seafood. The kick of yuzu and ginger paired well and added some personality.

Intrigued by their soups, we ordered their Certified Angus Beef broth. Colorful cut vegetables and raw beef shaped in spiral are nicely displayed and the raw beef instantly cooks when the plate is filled with the comfy broth. This starter comes with roasted bone marrow on the side (our very first time tasting this in Abu Dhabi).

For our mains, we had a crush for their Purebred 9+ Wagyu striploin (Blackmore from Australia) ordered in a tasting portion of 150g. If you fancy an extra, you can enhance your steak with grilled Omani lobster tail, seared foie-gras or seared scallops. We couldn’t resist topping our cut with foie-gras and chose Truffle potato mash as a side. We really were impressed with the supreme quality and softness of the meat and just loved every single bite of our medium-rare striploin.

A funny ceremony accompanies the mains as the waiters invite you to pick your posh Laguiole knife displayed in a box of six. They also propose you to pair your cut with a salt of your choice among four varieties with the Himalayan Pink shaved in your plate, the Palm Island Smoked, the Malden Sea or the Murray River Flake.

We definitely recommend the oven roasted Welsh lamb rack that comes with charred eggplant puree, borlotti beans and pot jus. Perfect tasting but it probably is best enjoyed on chilly days.

Chatting with the Chef at the end of the dinner, we definitely want to return to try the Pan seared Barramundi – an Asian seabass – that is paired with roasted potatoes, a winning carrot and ginger pairing and sun-dried tomatoes.

For these who fancy a glass of wine, there is an impressive new selection of wine served by glass to pair with your dishes.

To end on a sweet note, we shared the Signature Raspberry decadence that is not only beautiful but light and refreshing.

What we liked overall

The new Chef has stayed true to the roots of the restaurant while adding some new trendy additions. As he has worked in different Michelin starred restaurants across the globe – in Europe, USA, South Africa – we felt his love for authentic products and also appreciated the very fancy dishes design and overlook.
As some fine cuts come with a price tag, this spot is ideal to celebrate a memorable dinner with friends who also fancy great cuisine and fine cuts.
