Abu Dhabi foodies, time to mark your calendars, as Sontaya is set to host a culinary journey – Taste of Southeast Asia – at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi from October 2019 up until January 2020.

There’s no better way for Abu Dhabi foodies to spend the cooler months than feasting on the finest flavors from Southeast Asian cuisines brought in by guest chefs.  From October 2019 up until January 2020, the award-winning Pan Asian restaurant SONTAYA hosts guest chefs from top hotels in the Far East to create dedicated menus of the best dishes from Southeast Asian cuisines to Abu Dhabi.

Sontaya, meaning sunset in Thai, is set amongst a series of floating pavilions that look out to the Saadiyat Beach and the turquoise waters beyond. The terraces overlooking shimmering pools makes this one of the most romantic restaurants in town.

The first leg of Taste of Southeast Asia took guests through some of the finest Malaysian dishes in October 2019 with Chef Mohamed Rasit who travelled from The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur to prepare traditional dishes like laksa, curry and spicy noodles.

November 2019 with Thai Chef Phukvarun Watchmon of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park

The gastronomic journey continues from November 11 to 16 with Thai Chef Phukvarun Watchmon of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, who brings with him a special menu of irresistible delicacies from Thailand.

The a la carte menu delicacies, served from 6.30 PM until 11.00 PM, will feature a range of signature dishes, ranging from specialty curries and noodles to enticing appetizers, grilled dishes and desserts.

The choice of starters includes fried sea prawn, minced chicken salad, grilled red snapper, duck salad and fried seabass – all prepared with the freshest produce, using homemade marinades and cooked in the traditional method.

For mains, there is a variety of curries like ‘land and sea’ featuring sea prawn, chicken and dried fish, as well as the green short-rib prepared with beef short-ribs in green curry with turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime and red chili.

The southern-style seabass is cooked in yellow curry, tamarind juice, kaffir lime leaves and watermelon. For more familiar flavors, opt for the wok-fried chicken or grilled chicken skewer.

The dessert choices are as authentic as they come. Sariem is made from mung bean flour, young coconut meat, pandan leaves and coconut milk, while the Krong-Kraeng uses tapioca flour, palm sugar and white sesame.

Phukvarun Watchmon, guest chef at Sontaya, said: “My mother taught me how to use herbs and roots in cooking at a very young age as this is the base of Thai cuisine. I take pride in my menu, as it is my way of bringing our traditions to other parts of the world, and I am always happy to see people enjoying Thai dishes.”
