‘No Gluten-free beyond this point’ is their motto!
After Firin Bakery which opened its doors in 2015, there is another 100% gluten-free bakery now open in Abu Dhabi. Located in Al Muneera Plaza at Al Raha Beach beside Kababs and Kurries, this new comer is a welcome new addition if you are always looking for gluten-free options in the city.
This spot is both a bakery, pastry shop and also a café-restaurant that is open all day long (but only from 12 noon to 10pm during the soft opening mode).
The Bakery and pastry corner
It’s pleasant and quite unusual in Abu Dhabi to have the opportunity to buy your bread in a neighborhood bakery – apart from supermarkets of course- and we were actually surprised with the variety of breads on the shelves. White loaf, white crusted loaf, cheese roll, burger bun, English muffin, fruit and cinnamon loaf were among the type of breads available on the day we visited. They of course come at a price as they are gluten-free with 35 AED for the fruit and cinnamon loaf or 18 AED for the white crusted loaf.
If you have a sweet tooth and wish to enjoy a gluten-free dessert, there also are plenty of options such as eclairs -dark chocolate or salted caramel – different cookies, almond biscotto, walnut chocolate brownie, lemon tart, banoffee pie and more. You wouldn’t notice the difference between a traditional pastry shop indeed but there are funny signs inside the shop that remind us gluten is forbidden. The first of them is a golden inscription engraved in the floor at the entrance saying ‘NO GLUTEN BEYOND THIS POINT’.
There is even a shelf offering variety of convenient gluten-free products such as pasta, cornflakes, coconut flour, paleo granola flavored with chocolate or caramel apple with brands we have not seen before in Abu Dhabi.
A super cosy café and restaurant
This new café has definitely a lot of charm and relaxing vibes. We really enjoyed the colors mixing white, light beige for wooden furniture, gold with many accessories here and there – pots, lighting – and dark grey on the ceiling, lamps that give an industrial flair and pair well with the trendy patterned tiled floor.
A lovely black and white artwork has also been created specifically for Tawa Bakery by a UAE-based artist. It covers the full wall on the back and adds personality to this unique decor. Worth checking out!
The lunch menu is quite extensive and will definitely make anyone suffering from celiac disease forget they are on a specific diet.
From pizza to pasta, burgers, gourmet sandwiches, there is a lot of effort made to propose gluten-free versions of dishes that obviously usually contain gluten.
For our first visit, we opted for a Bresaola Focaccia that was filled with mozzarella, rocket leaves and bresaola. Fairly priced at 50 AED, the portion was generous, the bread very tasty and the sandwich juicy with the aioli sauce. Our chicken burger served with truffle oil fries and rocket leaves (65 AED) was also a good pick but the sesame bun lacked a bit of taste.
For our desserts, we enjoyed the walnut chocolate brownie but were less convinced with the eclair as the pastry was too dry and chewy to our taste.
Anyway, we definitely enjoyed our first experience and welcome this great initiative!
