One of our guilty pleasures is to drive and scan the city to discover new cafes in Abu Dhabi, concepts and gems in the city. The coffee joint scene is currently trending, and we have a hard time keeping up!

As we found some real gems recently, we decided to share and give you more ideas of spots to visit in the coming months, whenever you are in the city and want to experience something different, homegrown, unique and sometimes quirky.


SKINNY GENIE

Where: Masdar City

Inside Skinny Genie Cafe at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi

In a few words:
– one of our fave hidden gems of 2018, we love this cute cafe with an outdoor terrace serving organic, gluten-free food.
– wide variety of tasty and healthy homemade options, from soups, salads or mains served in glass jars for takeaway or in trendy enamel plates at the spot
– definitely worth a visit!

% ARABICA CAFE
Where: Al Jazeera Tower Abu Dhabi Corniche

In a few words:
– Originally from Kyoto, % Arabica is now in Abu Dhabi.
– Minimal decor, clean setting that makes it the ideal place to bring your laptop and work
– A welcome new addition in the city that opened in April 2018

KEKI JAPANESE BAKERY

Where: Khaleej Al Arabi Street, Al Bateen

In a few words:
– those like us who cannot resist a cheese tart or a fluffy Japanese cheesecake have to pay a visit to this newcomer.
– A first in the city that already has regular clients coming back for more
– Kawaii decor (meaning pretty in Japanese) and quiet atmosphere

BLACKSMITH COFFEE

Where: Al Saadyiat Island, close to NYUAD

– lovely homegrown cafe where to enjoy great healthy bites, nice pastries
– Scandinivian design decor, welcoming atmosphere
– ideal to go out and spend time with a friend or work outside from home

DOSE CAFE

Where: Al Wahda area

In a few words:
– it’s small, hidden and unique
– we love the floor, bar and wall made with polished concrete and chemistry formulas encrusted in the concrete
– many specialty or flavored coffees with a twist to try there; sweets too sugary to our own taste

LA PAUSE GOURMANDE

Where: 4 Sultan Bin Zayed the First St

This café is now permanently closed.

Spicy Chocolate Mousse with Espelette Chili Pepper

In a few words:
– a cafe and restaurant serving homemade and flavorful French cuisine
– a spot we like visiting any time of the day either for a sweet treat or for a proper lunch or dinner
– very fair pricing and excellent quality
– one of the rare spots in the city proposing Mariage Freres teas

Where: Close to Khalifa Park

In a few words:
– a new hidden specialty coffee shop in the city serving different types of coffee from Chemex, Aeropress, V60 to more funky options such as Spanish latte, popcorn latte or sparkling cold brew
– don’t expect to have a comfy breakfast there as the cafe is purely çoffee focused with few bites options to accompany your caffeine fix

In a few words:
– it’s a wide and welcoming cafe that keeps us coming back for the decor and lovely breakfast options
– a nice spot to work from or enjoy a breakfast with the family during the weekend

APTITUDE CAFE

Where: Al Nahyan area

In a few words:
– a tiny cafe to grab a hot or iced latte with a twist
– actually, we saw many customers staying in their car and ordering their coffee or signature drink to grab and go
– Some of their signature drinks are the saffron and rose latte…

STEROID CAFE

Where: Al Maqtaa area, near MProve Fitness Centre

In a few words:
– a quaint spot;
– we are fans of the industrial vibe, a gem as we like to find with many appetizing homemade pastries to enjoy

In a few words:
– a new place to go grab the Pastel de Nata
– lovely retro floor tiles, fado music in the background
– warm and fluffy custard cream tarts topped with ice sugar and cinnamon to enjoy but not only…

AL ULYA PORTUGUESE CAFE

Where: Al Wahda area

In a few words:
– it’s still one of our fave and authentic joints in the city to bring some homemade traditional savory bites home
– most customers are busy talking in Portuguese while enjoying savory and sweet bites
– every time we visit, there is something new on display as the cafe keeps adding new traditional Portuguese recipes to experience for our greatest pleasure

SWITCH

Where: Al Bateen Marina District

In a few words:
– Futuristic decor designed by Karim Rashid himself
– we cannot wait for temperatures to cool down and enjoy a lunch outdoors on the terrace facing the Bateen marina
– Mediterranean vibes for the cuisine, one of one best lemon and mint in the city

SHAY MADHBOOT

Where: Muroor Area

In a few words:
– we were among the first to discover this tiny cute spot with less than 5 tables; a true gem in the city
– still our fave joint to enjoy a karak tea or their signature karak along with shakshuka
– once you have tried, you’ll understand why we are always back there!

CRUSTIQUE BAKERY

Where: Al Falah Street

In a few words:
– if you can’t resist warm fresh and healthy breads, this place is for you
– the hardest part is to find it as it’s well hidden inside the Ministry of Energy building but once you tried it once, you’ll surely be back for more

– fresh sourdough bread, fairly priced breakfast formulas, welcoming spot that deserve more shout out
